Dondra Head Lighthouse is the talllest light house in Sri Lanka and also one of the tallest in South East Asia. The 47m height lighthouse is situated within a beautifully laid out garden surrounded by the cascading blue sea at the Southern most point of the island.
Geographically, this lighthouse is situated in a strategically nital location along the main shipping route form East to West. The octagonal shaped lighthouse was designed by James Douglass and constructed by William Douglass of the lmperial Lighthouse Service in 1882. Dondra Head is also one of the four international lighthouse in Sri Lanka. This was modernized in 2000 with the introduction of a Differential Global Positioning System and is computer linked to otsr major lighthouses around the coast. The light displays one white flash every 5 seconds and visible up to 28 nautical miles.
Great Basses Reef Lighthouse
Great Basses Reef Lighthouse is one of the offshore lighthouse in Sri Lanka. The Basses are aline of reefs off the Southeast coast of Sri Lanka. The Great Basses Reef Lighthouse too was desigmed by james Douglass and constructd by his brother William Douglass of the imperial Lighthouse Service in 1873. Being about 6 nautical miles form the shore, the lighthouse is located about 56 and 22 nautical milesNortheast of Dondra and Hambantota respectively. The 34m hight lighthouse is presently fitted with a new and powerful automatically controlled Solsr Light system. Like Little Basses Reef Light, it withstood the force of the tsunami with only modest damage. The two Basses lighthouse are among the most famous offfshore lighthouse of Asia. The light displays a white flash every 15 seconds and visible up to 25 nautical miles.
Galle Lighthouse
The Galle Lighthouse was the first lighthouse to be built in Sri Lanka and was constructed of iron, with an old fashioned dioptric apparatus revolved by clockwork. It was built by the British Board of Trede in 1848 when Point de Gall was an important port and the point of call for both mail and passenger vessels. This light house was built on the ramparts of the present Lighthouse Street in the old Dutch Fort. This wasburned down in 1934and was replaced in 1939, by the present lighthouse bulit further South on the ramparts overlooking the seaward channel into the Galle Harbour. The 28m hight white conical tower displays two white flashes every 15 seconda and visible up to 25 nautical miles.
Little Basses Reef Lighthouse
Little Basses Reef Lighthouse was designed by james Douglass and constructed his brother William Douglass of the imperial Lighthouse Service in 1878.The Basses
(derived from the Portuguese word "baxos"meaning shoals) are a line of reefs off the Southeast coast of Sri Lanka. Being about 5 nautical miles from the shore, the lighthouse is located about 75 and 40 nautical miles Northeast of Dondra and Hambantota respectively.Like Great Basses Light, it withstood the force of the tsunami with only modest damage. The two Basses lighthouses are among the most famous offshore lighthouses of Asia. The 34m height tower displays two very quick white flashes in every 10 seconds and visible up to 27 nautical miles.
Barberyn Island Lighthouse ( Beruwala )
Barberyn Island Lighthouse was built on an 8 acre Island,35 miles South of Colomboand half a mile from Beruwela.
The 46m height cylindrical shaped lighthouse was completed in1890, and modernized in 1969 by removing the old dioptric apparatus and replaced with the Pedestal Rotating Beacon. it was further modernized in 2000 with the installation of a Differential Global Positioning System (DGPS) and is computer-linked to other lighthouses around the clock.
Every boat or ship going to Maldives, which is an archipelago close to Sri Lanka, has to pass the Beruwela lighthouse area.
Therefore, the lighthouse serves an important function. Thereare only four international lighthouses in Sri Lanka, and Beruwela lighthouse is one of them. Light displays one White flash every 20 seconds andvisible up to 27 nautical miles.
Kevuliya ( Foul Point ) Lighthouse
Foul Point Lighthouse was built in 1863 and is located on the point at the Southern entrance to the Trincomalee
Harbour in Northeast coast of Sri Lanka. The 32m height conical stone tower displays one whiete fiashiin every 5 seconds and visible up to 22 nautical miles
Colombo LighthouseColombo Lighthouse was first established as a clock tower in 1860 and functioned as a lighthouse since 1865.The original tower was constructed by the same manufacturer as "Big Ben". This was eventually blocked by tall buildings and was replaced by the present lighthouse on a cliff at the Western tip of Sri Lanka called Galbokka Point in 1953. This was built by Mr.ANS Kulasinghe, a renowned Sri Lankan Engineer.The circular masonry tower measuring 26m height, painted in black and white chequered quarters on seaward, which displays 3 white flashes every 10 seconds. This group of flashes can be visible up to 25 nautical miles.
Round Island ( Trincomalee ) lighthouse
Round Island Lighthouse was built in 1863 is located top a small island in the bay of Trincomalee. The 31m height white cylindrical masonry tower displays three flashes in every 15 seconds, white or red depending on direction and visible up to 10 nautical miles. One of the white sectors marks the proper bearing of approaches to the Trincomalee Harbour.
Talaimannar lighthouse
Talaimannar lighthouse was built in 1915 and is located near the Northwestern end of Mannar Island, a short distance East of the Talaimannar Pier. The 17m height white cylindrical concrete tower displays one white flash every 5 seconds and visible up to 10 nautical miles
Point Pedro lighthouse
Point Pedro lighthouse was built in 1916 and is located at Northeastern corner of Sri Lanka and the Southern entrance to Palk Strait. The 31m height white conical masonry tower display one whit flash every 5 seconds and visible up to 10 nautical miles.
Kovilan Point lighthouse
Kovilan Point lighthouse was built in 1916 and is located at the Northwestern corner of Karaitivu Island, about 25km Northwest of Jaffna. This lighthouse marks a cape on Palk Bay, which divides Northern Sri Lanka from India. The 30m height white masonry tower displays two white flashes every 10 seconds and visible up to 11 nautical miles.
Kankesanturai lighthouse
Kankesanturai lighthouse was built in 1893 and is located on a bastion of an old fort on the Kankesanturai waterfront. Kankesanturai is a port at the Northern end of Sri Lanka and the sri Lanka Ports Authority has of developing Kankesanturai as a reiona port. The 25m height round masonry tower displays three white flashes everv 15 seconds and visible up to nautical miles.
