Thomas Carlyle
The most respected Scotish Essayst, critic and Historian Thomas Carlyle was born in the small village of Ecclefeehon, Dam-frieshire. His primary education began me local grammar schoel and his higher education ended at the University of Edinburgh, where he enrolled at the age of fourteen in 1809.

Jonathan Swift
Well-known satirist writer Jonathan Swift born to parents who had been living in Dublin, Ireland. Swift's father died shortly before he was born and his mother therefore, put him under the care of a governess. Swift was an angry and rebelleous boy who was not good in his studies. But he managed to obtain his degree from Trinity College in Dublin and was given the post of secretary of an English nobleman. Later Swift got a political post in Ireland.

William Shakerspere
William Shakespeare is widely regarded as the greatest writer of all time. He was born in Stratford-On-Avon, Warwickshire in England 1564 . William’s formal studies ended with grammer school. Shakespeanis name first became associated with the London theatre in 1592 and from 1594 he was listed as a member of the Lord Chamberlain’s Company of Actors which owned London’s best theatre. Shakespeare became a full-time dramatist with this company and took an interest in all aspects of production.
His probable first play HenryVI, Part I was staged Sometime between 1589 and 1592. Julius Ceaser appeared in 1599 or 1600. These were followed by Hamlet, his Macbeth, the Comedy of Errors, etc. Shakespeare wrote about forty plays and numerous poems such as Venus and Adonis, and The Rape of Lwxelo. William Shakespeare the greatest among the great died in the year 1616. His famous plays are widely staged are widely read to this day.

Galle Fort 2
The Ramparts and the Bastions
The most wonderful feature about the Fort is its walls and Bastions. The walls are called ‘Ramparts’ by the locals and a walk along them is considered a favourite pastime. The ramparts are built mostly of grey granite
rock that came to Galle as ballast. The three main bastions are the Sun, Moon and Star bastions facing
the Esplanade and the Galle International Cricket Grounds.
The main guard was usuauy stationed on the Sun Bastion which is at the harbour end of the rarnpart. The Moon Bastion, which is at the centre of the three, is the strongest and highest bastion. It had an underground, tunnel connecting it with the Star Bastion at the open sea end. On the seafront it

The historic Galle Fort has been the centre of attention any visitor to Galle for centuries Built bythedutch,beginning around 1663, the 36-ha walled Fort is now a UNESCO World Heritage site,and one of the few which has a thriving,vibrant, present-day buzz. In 1505, a Portuguese fleet bound for the Maldives was blown of course and took refuge in the natural harbour at Galle. Almost a sentury later, around 1589, they be gan building a small Fort here, and named it Santa Cruz. But this was destroyed when the Dutch took over in 1640. Galle was a major commercial port during the Dutch reign, and the fort provided the hub for trade government and sociallife.

Lighthouse
Dondra Head Lighthouse
Dondra Head Lighthouse is the talllest light house in Sri Lanka and also one of the tallest in South East Asia. The 47m height lighthouse is situated within a beautifully laid out garden surrounded by the cascading blue sea at the Southern most point of the island.
Geographically, this lighthouse is situated in a strategically nital location along the main shipping route form East to West. The octagonal shaped lighthouse was designed by James Douglass and constructed by William Douglass of the lmperial Lighthouse Service in 1882. Dondra Head is also one of the four international lighthouse in Sri Lanka. This was modernized in 2000 with the introduction of a Differential Global Positioning System and is computer linked to otsr major lighthouses around the coast. The light displays one white flash every 5 seconds and visible up to 28 nautical miles.
