Charlotte Bronte, the oldest of the most famous three Bronte sisters, was born in Thornton, in a village where the life expectancy at birth was only twenty fiveyears. She grew up with her two other sisters and the only Brother in the very rural settlement of Haworth in Yorkshire. Their father was rector of the village church
After studying at the village school, she retumed to the place of her birth and started a private school. She and her sister Emily taught there for three years. Charlotte later studied in Belgium and also taught for a year. Charlotte Bronte’s first novel, “The Professor” was universally rejected by every publisher whom she approached. However, this was published later in 1857, two years after her untimely death.
Her most famous novel Jane Eyre was published in 1847. It was an immediate success. This great novel based on the life of a decent young girl, won for its author a permanent place among England’s formost novelists.Charlotte Bronte died in the year 1855, only a couple of
years after her marriage, at the age of thirty nine.
